Premature Ejaculation (PE) affects 33% of all men. Learn how to deal with this issue.

What is Premature Ejaculation?

Premature Ejaculation (PE) is the issue of ejaculation occurring before a man and his partner are satisfied. This is a problem for a lot of men.  33% of all men have a problem with PE.

Why is this problem laughed off or seen as a joke when it can lead to depression and sexual displeasure. I think because men have a Superman complex. We hate to discuss anything that makes us seem less than super.

This is why erectile dysfunction (ED) and PE are not seen as serious diagnosis. Remember at Man of Health we have 4 pillars of health (physical, mental, Spiritual, and sexual). A man needs to be healthy in all 4 to be a Man of Health

I make sure to focus on PE because if you want to see a truly happy man correct this issue for him and his life will improve.

In this post we will discuss:

  • Why PE occurs?

  • How to know if you have PE?

  • How is it treated?

  • Lastly I will tell you what to discuss with your provider if you are having this issue

Remember always consult with your provider before taking any medication or supplements or stopping any medications.

Let’s get started:

Why does PE occur?

Premature ejaculation occurs because of psychological (mental) issues. These psychological issues can be sexual abuse. If someone has a history of being sexually abused it can cause premature ejaculation. In this instance you may need to sit down with your provider and let them help you find some help.

Psychological issues related to PE are:

  • Poor body image: lacking confidence with your image or your sexual tools can lead to premature ejaculation.

  • Depression: having your provider help you fix your underlying depression could treat your PE.

  • Anxiety: being nervous or anxious about the actual act sex can cause a man to have PE.

  • Biological Issues (things inside your body):

  • Hormone levels: A decrease in certain hormones (Testosterone) can cause PE

Prostate/urethritis: infection or inflammation of the prostate or urethritis can cause PE. There are treatment options for both (antibiotics and medication for benign prostatic hypertrophy see article)

How to know if you have PE?

One of the maim ways to determine if you have PE is the frequency in which premature ejaculation occurs.

PE is diagnosed if a man is not able to keep from ejaculating within 1 minute of penetration. PE also means that a man cannot stop himself from ejaculating even if he pauses.

PE is broken down into two categories:

  • Acquired: This means that a man was having normal function and having no issues then PE started to occur. With acquired your provider will investigate what could be the problem they made your PE occur.

  • Lifelong: This type of PE has always occurred even from your first sexual encounter.

How is it Treated?

Non-medical

There are different ways to delay ejaculation.

Counseling: A counselor who focuses on sexual issues may be able to help if there are any underlying issues causing your PE.

Masturbation: Masturbating 1-2 hours before having a sexual encounter may delay your ejaculation.

Foreplay: This may decrease your anxiety related to the act of sex.

Kegel exercises: these exercises help strengthen the pelvic muscles that allow a man to prevent his ejaculation. If you want to know where your pelvic muscles are located, next time you are urinating stop midstream. Stopping midstream is using the same pelvic muscles needed to stop ejaculation. Practice tightening those same muscles while lying down 10 reps 2 times a day. When you strengthen those muscles you should be able to control your ejaculation better.

Pause & Squeeze: while in the act of sex, when you feel like you are about to ejaculate have your partner squeeze near the head of your penis. This should eliminate the urge to ejaculate.

Condoms: condoms decrease sensitivity. This should decrease the urge to ejaculate. Some condoms come with numbing agents inside of the condoms.

Medications:

If the above techniques do not work, there are medications that can be used. Some of these medications can be bought over the counter.

These medications include creams and sprays that are placed on the penis 10-20 minutes BEFORE SEX.

There is a PE topical that is available by prescription. Talk to your provider to see if this option is right for you.

Oral medications are available so talk to your provider and see if these medications would be appropriate.
