The Power of Sleep: Are you getting a good quality or quantity?

I know you can hear the voices of the self made millionaires that scream, “You don’t need sleep, you need to working”.

I know you can hear your parents voices, “The early bird gets the worm” or if you had my parents it was “Get your butt out of that bed NOW”. Either way we have been taught that sleeping too much equals can be seen as laziness.

We also have heard the opposite from health experts that say a person needs at least 7-9 hours of sleep. (It was originally 6-8 hours but I guess an expert needed to sleep in one more hour.

I’m here to say that neither of these ideas or wrong but both ideas focus on the wrong “Q”. Both of these opinions focus on quantity (amount of hours slept) not quality (how good is the actual sleep?).

I’m here to tell you that the quality of a person’s sleep outweighs the quantity. I have had four hours of sleep that felt better than 10 hours of sleep.

What is quality of sleep?

The National Sleep Foundation: Sleep Health describes sleep quality as:

  • Sleeping more time while in bed (at least 85 percent of the total time)
  • Falling asleep in 30 minutes or less
  • Waking up no more than once per night; and
  • Being able to fall back to sleep in 20 min or less upon Awakening.

What to do to have good quality sleep?

To sleep more time while in bed:

REMEMBER that the bed is for two things only SEX AND SLEEP. If your not doing those two things do not be in your bed. This will train your body that when your in bed your either doing the naked dance or your sleeping.

  • Fall asleep in 30 min or less:

This issue can be fixed by only going to bed when you or physically and mentally tired. You should make sure that you DO NOT do anything stimulating before calling it a night (exercise, caffeine, emails, or phone). Get in the routine of relaxing 1 hour before bed with a nice shower and relaxing music or book.

  • Waking up no more than once per night:

Anything that makes you get up in the middle of some good sleep may need to be discussed with your provider.

  • Be able to fall back asleep in 20 min or less:

This key if you do wake up you should have the ability to fall back asleep with 20 minutes. If you cannot get out of your bed. It is important that you do something to relax your brain. This can be coloring, reading, or listening to soothing music. Do not get on social media and try to avoid your phone (it stimulates your brain)

What do I do to help my quality of sleep?

I tried to do all of these things to help improve my quality of sleep and I achieved a few of them, but I was still lagging on my sleep quality.

My personal problem was falling asleep and staying asleep. I worked night shift for 7 years so when I got off my body was still woke. I wanted something that helped me fall asleep and stay asleep.

I personally tried melatonin 5 mg. It did not help at all.

Benadryl would leave me sluggish after taking it, so I would take caffeine which compound my problem the next night.

I refused to go to a physician. I did not want a mediation that would be addictive and need monthly prescription (I didn’t believe my problem was that bad)

I researched different components of sleep aids online but I was very nervous about taking something that I had no control over the process.

So I decided to partner with a supplement company and produce my own Man of Health Sleep Formula called Restore.
